FAQs
What Does a Postage Meter Do and What Are the Benefits of Having One?

A Postage Meter is a machine used to produce/imprint evidence of postage payment on a mail item. Customers use postage meters for reasons of convenience, security of funds handling, professional envelope image, and not having to stand in line for stamps.

Can I Own One?

No. Customers rent or lease postage meters from private companies across Canada, but all meters authorized for use in Canada are manufactured by one of four companies: Ascom Canada, Francotyp-Postalia, Neopost and Pitney Bowes Canada.
Canada Post is working with these four manufacturers to introduce a new generation of metering technology over the next several years. This will affect all current postage meter users.

What Are The Benefits of Digital Technology?

A digital meter prints a stamp that is software controlled, as opposed to the noisy "impact printing" technology used in old meters with engraved mechanical stamp and town dies.
